A main focus of Urban Waters Partnership is to effectively reduce toxins entering our waterways by working with entities to voluntarily integrate strategies to improve water quality and habitat condition on their sites. The Urban Waters & Wildlife Program is the design and implementation branch of the Urban Waters Partnership. Through outreach, the Urban Waters & Wildlife Program (UWWP), housed within the Long Tom Watershed Council (LTWC), identifies businesses and other entities eligible for voluntary stormwater retrofits, including green stormwater infrastructure (GSI), soil improvement, tree planting, and other strategies. By focusing on existing industrial, commercial, educational, and private community spaces, the UWWP fills a complementary role to its municipal parners, who use regulatory tools to ensure new developments manage their stormwater on site. The UWWP team designs the GSI and other water- and wildlife-friendly landscape features and works alongside contractors to construct the retrofits under the leadership of a licensed landscape architect. The program also offers technical assistance for work in alignment with the mission to businesses within the Upper Willamette as fee-for-service.

In 2018, partners developed a Project Prioritization Matrix (PPM) that evaluates and prioritizes sites based on their impact to water quality, drinking water sources, wildlife habitats, visibility, quality of life, education, and environmental justice metrics. The highest ranked businesses receive priority for voluntary GSI installations or retrofits. A newly developed BIPOC filter will be applied to the entire matrix to identify & insure 20-25% of BIPOC sites are represented in the top finalists annually. Currently, the list includes over 500 businesses and is frequently updated.
